[Masterclass] Glaze Development: Part 1 — Translucent
Most glaze courses begin with a recipe. This one begins with raw materials.
Over ten weeks, you will learn how a glaze is built from the ground up—working directly with silica, alumina, fluxes, and other raw materials to understand how each element behaves in the kiln.
Each week, you will weigh, mix, test, fire, and refine your own formulas. By the end of the course, you will leave with a transparent glaze recipe developed through your own testing and a deeper understanding of how to continue evolving it.
Taught by Dr. Dohun Kim, a second-generation ceramicist with a doctorate in ceramic materials engineering, the course brings together inherited Korean ceramic knowledge and contemporary material science.
Historical Context
This course draws from a legacy of experimentation. Dr. Kim’s father spent more than sixty years making celadon in Korea, developing his own clay bodies and glazes at a time when there were few established formulas to follow. Achieving a single desired color could require tens of thousands of tests.
Dr. Kim later studied the science and theory behind that process. This Masterclass brings the two together: generations of hands-on knowledge, understood through contemporary ceramic materials science.

Highlights
Most glaze courses begin with a recipe. This one begins with raw materials—nothing premixed, nothing predetermined.
Exclusive access to our private 8th-floor kiln, reserved for Masterclass students—allowing for a flexible firing schedule throughout the course.
Class Structure
Kiln Review — Open the previous week’s firing, examine test tiles, and discuss results together.
Material Lecture — Explore the week’s principle, from silica and alumina to fluxes, and understand how each material shapes the glaze.
Formulation & Testing — Weigh and mix a new test series directly from raw materials using precision scales and laboratory tools.
Application & Documentation — Apply tests to tiles, label each sample, and record formulas and observations in your glaze notebook.
Firing & Refinement — Load test tiles for firing, plan the next round of adjustments, and reset the studio.
